Our History

Serving you best since 1957

Clark Freightways has a long and proud history, having been established in 1957 by its founder James (Jimmy) Clark (1932-1997). In the early years the company’s success was attributable to Jim Clark’s long standing commitment to providing fast, efficient service at a fair price. Today, the company remains a privately-held, family run operation with an old fashioned commitment to quality service, and placing a high value on our customer partnerships.

1957-1959
The year was 1957, and Jim Clark started out by serving Williams Lake, Quesnel and the Okanagan. In late 1959 Jim applied for a license as a public carrier so that he could begin hauling frozen foods for anyone requiring his services. He then began operating as Clark Transport.

1960’s
In 1962 Jim Clark incorporated Clark Reefer Lines Ltd. and began operating out of their first real terminal at 1st Avenue and Boundary Road. By now the business had expanded to include meat products, fish, poultry and any foods requiring temperature control.

1970’s
In the early seventies, Jim approached the Motor Carrier Commission for authority to haul all food products at a temperature not exceeding 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The request was granted, but the Motor Carrier Commission later felt that this authority was too broad and insisted that Jim re-apply. Jim’s refusal to re-apply was the catalyst to Clark Reefer Lines Ltd. becoming a major LTL food carrier in BC.

History 3
Clark’s Burnaby Head Office, Norland Avenue, Burnaby, in the 1980’s

1980’s
During the 1980’s Clark expanded service west from Prince George to include Smithers, Terrace, Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Burnaby Terminal on Norland Avenue was expanded to 24 doors and during the same decade the Kamloops terminal was moved to a larger, more modern facility.

1990’s
During the early ‘90s Clark expanded their service to Vancouver Island, opening terminals in both Victoria and Nanaimo. With this expansion Clark now served virtually every region and community within the Province of BC. Again, the Norland Avenue Head Office was renovated with over 3,000 square feet of office space being added to accommodate the continuing growth.

2000’s
Today the company continues to invest heavily in new technologies, and equipment while enhancing our service. Presently, Clark Freightways operates a fleet of over 175 trailers and 75 power units. The company continues to proactively develop and implement a variety of new and innovative Human Resources practices and quality control procedures, all in an effort to meet the changing needs of the transportation market within the Province of BC.

September 2009
Clark Freightways moved into its new General Office and state of the art cross-dock facility in September of 2009. The new facility is located in Coquitlam, BC and is one of the most modern facilities in the industry with a temperature controlled warehouse, modern facilities and a brand new maintenance facility including wash bays.
